How does a remortgage work?

  • The remortgaging process is similar to taking out a mortgage, requiring fees, applications, affordability checks, and a home valuation.
  • Get a mortgage in principle - Check if a provider is willing to lend you the money needed to pay off your current mortgage and move to a new deal.
  • Check remortgaging costs - Assess whether remortgaging is cost-effective, as there may be fees, and switching during a fixed period might not be beneficial.
  • Fill out the application - Apply for the new mortgage, undergo affordability and credit checks, and have your home valued.
  • Solicitor requirement - A solicitor is needed unless you are remortgaging with the same lender.
  • Start repaying - If approved, you’ll transition to your new mortgage and start making payments.
